The pursuit of waterfowl has been the focal point of J.J. Kent’s life since his first duck hunt he went on when he was just a young boy. The sight of teal buzzing the decoys is still fresh in his mind that first misty September morning in Sulpher Springs, Texas.

Since then J.J. has mastered the art of calling, decoying and hunting ducks and Geese all across Texas and surrounding States. As a high school kid he was torn between high school athletics and being out in the timber chasing mallards. Then as he entered Texas Tech University he studied wildlife and took every class that the University offered that dealt with Waterfowl. He traveled to several Wildlife Management Areas in different states to study waterfowl. Of course being in the panhandle of Texas offered some of the finest waterfowl hunting in the state! J.J. found himself in the field almost more than in the classroom!

After graduating and moving back to Dallas, J.J. began to compete in Duck Calling competitions. He has consistently found himself in the top 5 duck callers in the State of Texas, and has won several non-sanctioned competitions. He has been selected as a member of the Z-Unit for Zink calls.. He is also on the Pro Staff for Mossy Oak Waterfowl, Avian X, DT Systems, Motor Guide Trolling Motors, and Yeti Coolers. Being a Pro-staff member of these companies, J.J. travels to different locations giving seminars to youth and adults alike. J.J. is passionate about waterfowl, and the outdoors, and is an avid member of Delta Waterfowl and Ducks Unlimited; he has volunteered his time and knowledge to pass on the heritage of the sport.

Hunting the Eye of a Blue-Winged Storm

by lynn burkhead, hunting365

In close to two decades of chasing blue-winged teal across the Red River Valley during the month of September, my success has been…well, it has been modest at best.

Each season has produced one or two teal here. And every so often, two or three teal there.

But never a four-bird limit of blue-winged teal.

A hunt years ago with Sherman, Texas attorney Craig Watson and former Austin College assistant football coach Vance Morris was simply a day late and a dollar short.

Watson had discovered a sizable number of teal on Lake Texoma a few days before our hunt. But an overnight cold front and the here-today, gone-tomorrow flighty nature of bluewings left us with only a bird or two in the bag.

A hunt with my old high school pal Mike Bardwell several years back produced a really good shoot when a couple of good flocks screamed into the decoys. With four hunters in the blind, our bag of 11 teal wasn’t bad.

But it wasn’t a limit.

A year or two, a jump shooting effort on a North Texas stock tank brought me as close as I’ve ever been to a limit of blue-winged teal.

When the shooting was done, a surprising triple had been scored by yours truly.
